There has been a lot debate about what is often called “free” energy—energy that can supposedly, with the right technology, be drawn straight out of the atmosphere, and in very plentiful supply. The debates are about whether or not the stuff truly exists or not, what it will actually cost were it to be harnessed, and if it does exist is it actually as plentiful and environment friendly as it is being made out to be by proponents of research and growth into this potential alternative energy source.

When one hears the phrase “free power device”, one may be hearing about certainly one of several totally different concepts. This might mean a tool for accumulating and transmitting power from some supply that orthodox science does not recognize; a tool which collects energy at absolutely no cost; or an example of the legendary perpetual motion machine. Needless to say, a perpetual movement machine—a machine which drives itself, forever, once turned on, subsequently needing no vitality input ever once more and never running out of energy—is impossible. However, it isn’t so simple to say that a brand new technology for harnessing the vitality “floating” in the atmosphere is impossible. New applied sciences replace outdated ones all the time with skills that had just been “impossible”. Harnessing the facility of the atom for providing big amounts of vitality was “impossible” till the 1940s. Flying human beings were an “impossible” factor until the turn of the 20th century and the Wright Brothers’ flight.

The biggest claim of the proponents of “free” power is that big amounts of energy might be drawn from the Zero Point Field. This is a quantum mechanical state of matter for a defined system which is attained when the system is on the lowest possible energy state that it may be in. This is called the “ground state” of the system. Zero Point Energy (ZPE) is sometimes referred to as “residual” energy and it was first proposed to be usable as an alternative form of energy manner back in 1913 by Otto Stern and Albert Einstein. It is also known as “vacuum energy” in research of quantum mechanics, and it is supposed to characterize the power of completely empty space. This power field throughout the vacuum has been likened to the froth at the base of a waterfall by one of many principal researchers into and proponents of Hal Puthof. Puthof also explains, the time period ‘zero-point’ simply means that if the universe have been cooled down to absolute zero where all thermal agitation effects would be frozen out, this power would nonetheless remain. What isn’t as effectively known, however, even among practicing physicists, are all the implications that derive from this known facet o quantum physics. However, there are a bunch of physicists—myself and colleagues at several research labs and universities—who are inspecting the details, we ask such questions as whether or not it might be possible to ‘mine’ this reservoir of vitality for use as an alternative energy source, or whether or not this background power field may be responsible for inertia and gravity. These questions are of curiosity because it is known that this energy could be manipulated, and due to this fact there is the likelihood that the control of this energy, and possibly inertia and gravity, would possibly yield to engineering solutions. Some progress has been made in a subcategory of this subject (cavity quantum electrodynamics) with regard to controlling the emission rates of excited atoms and molecules, of interest in laser analysis and elsewhere.
